What this paper is about
How this paper will be taught
There will normally be two lectures and one 2-hour practical session per week. There will be a stand-alone lab in the first week. Then, over trimester, the practical sessions operate on a rotation involving three groups. Not all groups need to attend every week. Assignment of students to groups will be made in week 1. There is also a one-day local field trip to collect river gauging data, on Saturday 5th August (backup day 12th August). The remaining practical sessions in will operate as whole-class exercises that require all students to attend. The lecture programme will support a deeper understanding of topics.
There will be three online quizzes on these topics: surface water hydrology, lake hydrology, groundwater hydrology. This short online quizzes are designed to test your basic knowledge on each topic and engagement in the course.
The practical programme is an important component of the paper and students should complete all assignments associated with these. There is an emphasis on the advanced use of Microsoft Excel for the analysis of hydrological datasets, as well as on report writing.
Required Readings
Reading for individual topics will be notified.
All students must purchase a practical manual covering the river discharge field and lab programme via the Waikato Print Shop. This will be available in the first week of Trimester B.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
Assessments
How you will be assessed
There are no compulsory items of assessment in this internally-assessed paper, but all practical assignments, three online quizzes, and the final exam contribute to the final grade.
The river discharge measurement assessments consist of four separate items for each student. The class will be split into three groups and undertake three projects in a rotation. Data collection for two of these (Waikato River Gauging and Dilution Gauging) is undertaken during the weekend field trip, and data collection for the third (Weir Calibration) is during separate lab times for each group. During whole-of-class labs (analysis sessions), groups will work on data processing and submit results as preliminary brief reports (4% each). A final integrative report is weighted at 13%.
Three additional practical assignments associated with laboratory classes will be completed individually.
The three online quizzes will occur outside of lecture slots.
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 60:40. The final exam makes up 40% of the overall mark.
